Science = Magic.

We get so desensitized to seeing the impossible through visual FX in film and television, yet it’s clear that even in “the real world”, the impossible can happen every day. Technologists and scientists are continually unraveling and redefining what we consider part of our agreed-upon reality.

Quantive Levitation lets you finally have controllable flying car races.

Non-Newtonian fluids can dance on speaker cones to dub step

Hydrophobic coatings let you dip a finger in water without getting wet.

Superfluid helium can defy gravity through zero viscosity

This is the craziest science I’ve seen this side of reality.

AR Remote Control Video game?

Posted on July 12, 2011 by

The AR Drone blows my mind on so many levels — iDevice app remote control quadrocopter with remotely-accessed onboard cameras? Augmented reality video game dogfights? And this amazing tech is only around $300?

Clearly we are already living in the future.

A future made of glass

…In which we see a major glass manufacturer pitch us on a full-on digital touchscreen lifestyle replete with said manufacturer’s glass. Some of these aren’t too believable (glass cel phone? with glass battery?), but we’re very close to much of it. In fact, even the stovetop (or one like it) already exists.

While the above technical demo video of this new technology may seem less inspiring, It’s mindblowing once it sinks in how radically “traditional digital photography” will be left behind once the tech hits the market.

The interactive demo hosted at Lytro is much more breathtaking at its ability to help visualize what it feels like to have a photo that is freed from the constraints of a defined focus.

Fast Company has further ramblings on some of the many possible impacts this could have on the market.

In the beginning there was joystick movement with a button, and it was good. From there, controllers have added more joysticks, and more buttons. Aiming. Motion capture. even Audio.

But now, with all of these combined with a 6″ touchscreen display, the possibilities for Wii Games (and computer interfaces) just got even more interesting as seen in just a few of the tech demos shown here.

Tactile interaction and drawing? Seeing a baseball game from both players’ perspective simultaneously? Seeing not only where your golfer is standing, but where the ball is lying on the ground in front of you? Aiming with picture-in-picture sniper clarity? Cool.

I’ve wanted something like this for a while to make it more straightforward for webkit animation/development. Looks like I’m still waiting for it to become a reality, though Wallaby does look interesting in the mean time.
